Spanish Dessert with Oranges, Honey and Yogurt Recipe

A light dessert made from orange slices, honey and thick yogurt is a simple way to taste Spanish sunshine by the spoonful. In Spain, citrus fruit is so good that it’s often served almost plain – here we just gently boost the flavor with honey and cinnamon. It’s a great alternative to heavy cakes after dinner, especially when you’re craving something sweet but not too high in calories.

This dessert showcases the natural sweetness and aroma of ripe oranges, enhanced only slightly with honey and warm spices. It’s quick to make, feels sunny and Mediterranean, and is light enough to enjoy even after a hearty meal.

Spanish Dessert with Oranges, Honey and Yogurt

Chef's tips

Use the best, juiciest oranges you can find – their flavor really makes the dish. Greek-style or other thick yogurt works best, as it doesn’t become watery when layered with fruit. Toast the almonds just before serving so they stay crisp and aromatic.

How to serve

Serve in transparent glasses so the layers of yogurt and orange slices are visible. For a more elegant version, finish with an extra drizzle of honey and a small strip of lemon zest on top of the mint.

Ingredients

  • oranges - 4 piece
  • plain yogurt thick - 400 g
  • honey - 3 tablespoons
  • almonds flaked - 30 g
  • cinnamon ground - 0.5 teaspoons
  • lemon zest finely grated - 0.5 teaspoons
  • mint fresh - 4 sprigs
Main Ingredient: orange

Preparation

  1. Toast the flaked almonds in a dry frying pan over medium heat for 3–4 minutes, shaking the pan often, until they are lightly golden and fragrant. Remove from the pan so they don’t burn and set aside to cool.
  2. Peel the oranges very thoroughly, removing the peel and all the white bitter pith. Slice into rounds about 0.5 cm thick; you can cut larger slices in half.
  3. In a bowl, mix the yogurt with half of the honey, the cinnamon and the grated lemon zest until smooth and lightly sweet.
  4. Spoon a layer of yogurt into the bottom of glasses or small bowls, then arrange the orange slices on top. Drizzle with the remaining honey.
  5. Sprinkle with the toasted flaked almonds and garnish with fresh mint leaves. Serve immediately or chill in the fridge for 15–20 minutes before serving.

This is one of those desserts I turn to when I want something sweet but don’t feel like baking. It brings back memories of simple citrus desserts eaten on hot days in Spain – minimal effort, maximum flavor.
