Japanese toast with tofu and soy–honey sauce Recipe
These are crispy slices of bread topped with pan-fried tofu and a simple sweet-salty soy and honey sauce. They’re inspired by Japanese tofu snacks with tare sauce, but served in a form similar to European-style toast. Perfect as a quick dinner or a warm movie-night snack.

Ingredients
- tofu - 200 g
- bread - 6 slice
- soy sauce - 2 tbsp
- honey - 1.5 tbsp
- rice vinegar - 1 tbsp
- vegetable oil - 2 tbsp
- garlic - 1 pc
- chives - 1.5 tbsp
- sesame seeds - 1 tbsp
Main Ingredient:
tofu
Preparation
- Pat the tofu very dry with paper towels and cut it into small cubes (about 1–1.5 cm).
- Peel the garlic and chop it finely.
- In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, honey and rice vinegar until the honey dissolves.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the tofu and fry for 6–8 minutes, stirring gently, until the cubes are golden and slightly crispy on the outside.
- Add the garlic to the pan and fry for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
- Pour the soy, honey and vinegar mixture into the pan. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring, until the sauce thickens slightly and coats the tofu in a glossy glaze. Remove the pan from the heat.
- Drizzle the bread slices lightly with the remaining oil and toast them in a dry pan or in the oven for 5–7 minutes, until crispy.
- Spoon some tofu in sauce onto each toast. Sprinkle with chopped chives and sesame seeds. Serve immediately while the bread is still warm and crispy.
